You realize with some concern that Emma is staring at Annie - clearly she has noticed the changes to Annie's appearance.
"What the??? How the???" she splutters, as her eyes take in the changes. She looks towards you. "What's going on Dan? I may be pretty fast at putting on my make-up at times, but that puts me to shame."
You really don't know what to say to her. Do you explain everything, or try to make up some sort of story? "Look, I..." was all you manage to say.
However, it seems that Annie has had this problem before, and seems much more able to deal with the situation.
"It is of my doing Emma. Do please sit with me a moment, and I will explain to you..." She says.
Emma is clearly quite dumbfounded, and indeed does sit at the table, facing Annie. Annie looks her in the face. "It is quite a complicated story but I will do my best to ensure your questions are fully answered." She reaches forward and touches Emma's hand.
