Chapter #5

His Mom's Twin

by: Mary Michelson Author IconMail Icon
"I'm home," Aaron shouted as he walked through the front door. He tossed his bookbag on the floor and headed towards the kitchen.

"Hi," his mother said. "How was work today?"

Work? What was that supposed to mean? Did she mean school? Sure, school could be difficult, any 15 year-old would agree, but Aaron wouldn't call it work. Whatever.

"It was fine, I guess." Aaron rooted around the fridge looking for an energy drink. He always had at least one in there, but today he couldn't find any. All he found were diet colas. Oh well, Aaron figured. Caffeine was caffeine. He popped one open, noticing his fingernails were getting awfully long. He'd clip them soon enough.

Shuffling around the pantry, Aaron looked for an after-school snack. Instead of his usual array of cookies, snack cakes and chips, there didn't seem to be any. The cupboards were ransacked of anything a teenage boy could want.

"What happened to all the snacks?" Aaron asked his mother. "I know we had some Pop-Tarts in here this morning."

"Pop-Tarts?" his mother asked, incredulously. "Gosh, I haven't bought any of those since college."

"I don't understand. Did you throw them out? I know you bought a box for me the last time you went shopping."

"When I went shopping for you? Honey, you know I don't mind you living with me and Jeff, but we had an understanding. You buy your own groceries. If you want junk food, that's your business. And frankly, you could stand to cut back on the sweets."

Now what was that supposed to mean? His mom had always done the grocery shopping. And why would he be living anywhere else? He was only 16. He was supposed to be living with his parents. And why did she refer to his father as Jeff?

He was tired. That must be it. The world wasn't making sense because he was tired. There wasn't as much caffeine in a diet cola as there was in an energy drink. Although, he must admit, the flavor was much better than he anticipated.

What happens now?
