Samus Aran had been a consultant for the Federation on a lot of their projects and missions, however upon hearing this new prospect, she only agreed to look at it in hopes that she could veto it immediately. A new Phazon enhancement device, which she was somehow supposed to believe would not backfire spectacularly? She felt she had seen just about enough of the substance these past months, bringing it up again seemed like a mistake.
Upon entering the laboratory, she was greeted by the head of the project, Dr. Jim Morker. He seemed highly enthusiastic about the project, beyond just the fake cheery attitude that some scientists will put on in hopes of getting grant money. He acted genuinely optimistic about their work, assured of himself that it will be an actual aide to the Federation, rather than yet another detriment.
Eventually they entered the main engineering hall and the device was revealed in person.
"Here it is Ms. Aran, the PCM- the Phazon Conversion Module!" Dr. Morker said with utmost excitement.
Samus decided to cut right to the chase, "Alright, so tell me doc, how is this device of yours different from the PED suit you guys made that almost killed me?"
"Figured you might ask about that," Morker responded, "Your old PED suit took naturally produced phazon and applied its usage directly to yourself and your power beam. This, however, puts the phazon through a strict filtering process, and then applying a substance that the body can take with much fewer and less severe side effects. The substance it creates has a very long, scientific-sounding name, but the lab boys like to call it 'phakeon'."
Samus was still skeptical of anything involving phazon, but this did give her a small hint of optimism. "So what did you want me here for?"
"Well..." Morker continued, "There's not an easy way for me to say this... but, we think you would be the prime test subject."
Samus raised her brow.
"Yes, yes, I know, a bit of a shock. But for starters, we've only been able to get our current prototype to work on females. Our test group, the female rats- no ill effects whatsoever. The male rats, however, all seizures, all the time. Hoo boy, not pretty. Secondly: The Federation is confident that you can handle tech like this. And besides, we'll take all the precautionary measures necessary to ensure that you don't just fall over dead. We have an emergency stop on the PCM, everything has been accounted for."
Samus let herself think for a moment, but eventually realized that if she didn't agree to test it, the federation would just get some other unfortunate soul who was much less prepared for something like this.
"Alright..." she eventually said, "Let's just get this over with."

After some hours of prepping, Samus had been stripped down to her zero suit, placed alone in a test chamber with the PCM attached to the back of her hand. The design was surprisingly sleek for a prototype, not jutting out too much, and having small injectors going up her hand, entering her body just above her wrist. To the side of the chamber was a window into an observation station, housing both Dr. Morker and two federation guards on either side of him.
"Alright, Samus..." He began, "Let's get this show on the road. On your PCM you will see a digital display showing your current "E.L." or Enhancement Level. Your current EL is simply zero, of course, so raise that to whatever you feel comfortable with.
Samus reluctantly dials her EL up from zero to one.
