Captain Picard was allowing Data to captain the ship as they undocked from DS9. It had had to be a brief trip, as the emergency only allowed them to pick up the necessary equipment for analysis.
Data's performance was textbook. Which was hardly surprising, and he stood up allowing Jean-Luc to take the command chair for the mission.
Without doubt it would be dangerous, but how often did a planet spontaneously explode. Only the vulcanologists were left on Eridani 8, everybody else being evacuated. It was thought when the planet finally blew it would devastate the entire system.
The ship vanished through the wormhole and was soon on it's way.
Commander Riker was away on leave with Deanna Troi. 'Finally' the captain thought. He wondered if they would ever get their act together. The voyage was uneventful, and they were kept up to date by sub-space.
As the ranking officer, Jean-Luc Picard was responsible for every life on the planet. So when they arrived, he beamed down with Doctor Crusher, and Lt. Barclay.
The doctor confirmed that there were no other life signs on the planet, while the Lieutenant took some readings from the equipment. It wasn't long before he was agitated and punching his Padd, again and again.
"Erm... Captain ... the chain reaction is accelerating." he sounded concerned. Both by speaking to the captain, and the whole situation.
"Geordi beam up the scientist now."
They disappeared in a whirl a sparkling white particles.
"Once you have them on board, beam up the three of us."
Even as he spoke a shockwave appeared on the horizon, all around their position.
"As soon as you can, please."
Data cut into the conversation. "Sir we'll have to go to warp immediately you materialise."
The shockwave raced closer, destroying everything in it's path. As the away team felt the pull of the transporter beam."
