Stephan watched with satisfaction as the once-impressive city of New York continued to dwindle in his hand, becoming tinier and tinier until it was finally nothing more than a barely-visible speck of dust lost in the vast expanse of his palm. It was now so small that it would probably take an airliner hours to cross the width of his hand!
Taking care not to accidentally dislodge the speck-sized metropolis Stephan leaned across and took a ruler out of his bag. He laid the ruler across his palm, almost touching the little city...
The microscopic population could only pray as they saw the vast object, seemingly hundreds of miles in length, descend from the sky in the grip of a gigantic thumb and forefinger. At first they thought it was going to flatten them, but the object finally came to rest somewhere between five and ten miles away from the edge of the city. Even that distance was too close for comfort: although nearly flat by Stephan's scale the cheap plastic ruler seemed so huge to the tiny New Yorkers that it rose higher than any mountain above the skyscrapers. They could see clearly how the white plastic surface was pitted and scarred with scratches that would normally be invisible to the naked eye. They could also see the widely-spaced black measuring lines stretching off into the distance along the length of the ruler. If that wasn't humiliating enough, they realised with shock that the entire city of New York was less than the width of a single one of those black lines!
Stephan lined up the marks on the ruler with the minuscule speck that was the shrunken city. He felt a thrill of satisfaction and excitement as he saw that the city was so tiny that he could no longer get an accurate measurement: it was certainly no more than a 10th of a millimeter across at most! The teenager wondered what he might do next with the helpless little city...
