Chapter #3

Professor Keith Adams

    by: expandor Author IconMail Icon
Professor Keith Adams was tired. He had been up all night working on an in depth presentation to the base's executive staff, which comprised of impatient Generals and corporate executives who had little understanding of the work being done at the base.

"And so, with an extension to our deadline...I am quite confident that we can begin humans trials in as little as two months."

There were grumbles of dissatisfaction from around the room, as those crowded around the meeting table exchanged apprehensive looks. Professor Adams knew what was coming next, a demand for more progress, faster results and total success by the end of the month. He had been dealing with such unrealistic demands ever since he started work at the base.

General Parks, the commander of the base, shook his head. "Two months is too long. Do you have any idea how much money our financiers have sunk into this project, Professor? They want results, and it's my ass on the line here."

A small chuckle came from across the other side of the room, and Professor Adams turned to face a man he had grown to hate over the last few months: Martin. The always cheerful, always mysterious representative of just whoever it was that was backing this project. Martin seemed to exist solely to make sure the project was kept on track.

"You need not worry General," Martin said, smiling in the General's direction. "My employers know you are doing your best. We merely require quicker results, especially where human testing is concerned."

"Human testing is dangerous," Professor Adams said. "We need to continue our simulations before we can be sure human testing is safe."

"We've already got you willing test subjects," General Parks snapped. "Use them."

"I agree with the General," Martin said, still smiling. "My employers would like Human trials to begin immediately. Use one of the willing subjects, if anything goes wrong, nobody will hold you responsible."

"There," General Parks grumbled. "You heard the man Professor, begin the trials. Now."

"Sir I don't think..."

"Professor, I'm giving you a direct order. Begin the trials."

Keith knew it was useless to argue. He was beginning to wish he had never been selected to head up this project. While he had been told it was the opportunity of a life time by his superiors, and that he was perfect for the job, he had concerns over the ethics of this so called 'E-Formula'. He wondered whether the world was ready for such a breakthrough in genetic manipulation.

"We have our decision then," Martin clapped his hands together. "I look forward to seeing the results Professor Adams, we will all be watching you very closely over the next few days."

Keith sighed, and made his way back to his lab. It seemed as though he would begin human trials whether he wanted to or not...
