Josh walked around the edge of the pool, peering down into the water, which was strangely still. The whole place seemed so much creepier - clothing and towels had been abandoned at the side of the pool, which added to the eerie feeling Josh was getting about his surroundings.
The last time Josh had been here, the pool had been bustling with activity; swimmers and athletes from across campus had filled the water, training and exercising for upcoming sporting events of the season.
"Hello?" Josh called out. "Anybody here?"
Josh received no reply, not that he was surprised. He expected pretty much everyone who had escaped the virus had left the building by now, and those who had been infected were probably in hiding. Josh knew he wouldn't want to show his face in public if he was transforming into some kind of freaking giant.
"Well, I give up," Josh shrugged. "There's nobody here."
Josh sighed and turned around, he took a step forward, and his foot trod on a damp towel. Before Josh could even think, his foot slipped - the towel slipped out from under his feet, and he lost his balance. The next few seconds passed by in what seemed like slow motion - instantly, Josh knew he was falling, he toppled sideways, slipped from the stone floor surrounding the pool, and landing in the water below with a huge splash.
Josh was briefly submerged, but managed to drag himself to the surface quite quickly. He immediately made for the side of the pool, pulled himself up and clambered out, his clothes were soaking wet, and he was sure he'd swallowed a little water.
He knew this wasn't good. Everyone else he knew who had swam in that pool had gotten infected...but maybe there was a chance this was fresh water? Perhaps it was no longer contaminated? Maybe it had just been a coincidence that his team had all blown up to immense proportions after swimming in the pool? Josh's mind raced with possibilities as he tried to calm himself.
He knew he had to act fast, but wasn't sure what to do...
