Okay, instead of 'acquiring' some god-like powers, how about Steven finding a special kind of remote/device (yes I know, its been done to death) that can swap people's bodies, body parts, personalities, clothing etc. You can choose what the device is called, whether it be the 'Transitioner', the 'Interchanger', the 'Variance Initiator', I'm sure there are a thousand names for such a wonderful device. It would be found in close proximity to the store where Steven works, or maybe he finds it on his way to work or to his apartment.
You can also decide whether the people it is used on are aware of the changes done to them or not.
There'll be no limitations on who the remote is used on, all I ask is that you keep with the characters within the store, and of course outside the store...any character (except celebrities, lets keep it midly believable) can be introduced.
