Julie smashed her fist into the stunned cholo's jaw, and a primal part of her sung with triumph.
The gun. Pummeling this brute might be fun, but he had a considerable size advantage over her. Once he shook the cobwebs from his skull he might over power her, and that could be the end for Julie. Engaging in further hand to hand combat might be ill advised. Jamming her knee into his crotch as a parting gift, Julie turned around and started to make her way back to the pistol.
The shooting hadn't stopped when she clobbered this fuck, so Julie understood there were other participants involved in this gun fight, but as of yet she hadn't spotted any of them. Now, on her hands and knees, trying to reach the untended pistol, Julie came face to face with one of these previously undetected combatants.
He was maybe 15 feet away, cowering behind a fixation upon which a tree had been planted, firing at what Julie guessed must have been Tom's position, when they saw each other. Julie out in the open, with no weapon and no protection, and this rotten bastard taking cover and blasting away like it was the OK Corral.
The checkout counter and a small section of the lobby was to her left, where Tom must have been, and to her right was the vast majority of the restaurant's dining area, the newly discovered shooter, and beyond that the playground. The gun she was trying to reach was lying directly in the line of fire, but tauntingly close, no more than a few feet away, when her newfound foe turned his weapon on her and fired.
A nine millimeter slug punched into her right shoulder and lodged itself in her lung, knocking her on her side. A stunned Julie blinked, coughed up a mouthful of blood, and marvelled at this turn of events. Really? Did he just shoot me? The reality of the situation suddenly hit home with surprising clarity, and for the first time Julie understood her life might actually be at stake here. Fear so palpable you could cut it with a knife crashed in on her, and panic threatened to destroy her nerves.
Then, remembering her task, Julie regained focus. The gun. I have to reach the gun. She had a goal, and with that her panic subsided, but before she could pick herself up a second round struck her in the abdomen and ripped through her guts. "Uhhnn!" Julie grunted. Feeling the fires of hell blazing in her belly, Julie blocked out the pain and rolled back onto her stomach. Almost there. Just a little farther.
She began shimmying forward, now less than a foot from her objective, when a third shot bit into her right buttock. "Ahhh, are you fucking serious?!" Julie screamed with dismay. Shot repeatedly, she was discouraged, but didn't stop. I'll be okay, just keeping moving, she told herself. As she reached for the pistol another bullet ricocheted off the floor next to her. Pieces of tile stung her side, but left her basically unscathed.
Now effectively armed for this fight, Julie raised up on her knees and took aim at her shooter. I've got you now, you fucker.
