Chapter #6

The Crown's Head

by: Phelina Hemtrop Author IconMail Icon
Midnight nuzzled her neck and grunted. "I'll take that as a yes." Rose smiled at the horse, glad to have its companionship. Having decided, she walked determinedly to the stable attached to the inn. A small boy ran up, but she quickly indicated that she didn't need any help. She couldn't spare even the few small coins for his service. After settling Midnight in for the night, Rose walked back to the doorway and, taking a deep breath, entered into the premises.

No one noticed her at first, as all the attention was focused on a bard playing a jig in a corner. However, a thin woman sporting a clean apron soon approached, her face drawn and lined with stress and age. "Welcome to the Crown's Head, ma'am. What would you be wanting?"

"How-How much for a room?"

The woman looked doubtful. "Well, I don't know that we've got room, on accounts of the caravan that just arrived today."

"Oh." Rose suddenly felt very tired.

The woman continued to stare at her doubtfully, and then glanced up and down to seize her up. "Well, I guess you could share with my girl for the night and I'll only charge you one pont for that."

"Thank you so much," Rose said gratefully.

"You be wantin' something to eat?" the woman asked, brushing aside the thanks in the simple way of kind people.

"Yes please."

"Sit yourself down over there-" she pointed at an empty table away from the door, "and I'll bring something right out."

"Thank you," Rose said again, and then settled into the chair indicated by her hostess. Now that she could rest, she found herself smiling at the lively antics of the bard. He had the crowd roaring with laughter at a comedic rendition of how a blind man kissed a horse, thinking it to be his shrewish wife.

"Here you go, dear." The proprietress appeared at her elbow with a steaming plate heaped with food. Rose dug in, pacing herself to enjoy every warm bite after the past two nights out in the cold.
