Chapter #4A cordial handshake! by: Kilbil Before you know it, your hand firmly grasps your twin's outstretched one, and you awkwardly shake. There's still a sense of unease in your double's eyes, but at least he doesn't look like he'll bolt at any minute. That's what you would have done, and considering you had a sneaking feeling that this guy was quite literally you from the past, it was a testament to your ability to defuse situations that you were able to make it to this point.
The fact that you were here, sharing a cordial handshake with yourself from the past, is by far one of the most surreal experiences you've ever had the misfortune to bear through. It feels as though something should have exploded or disintegrated by now. That's usually what happens in time travel stories like this. You're really glad it didn't, considering the circumstances, but you should probably be at least a bit more careful next time. And less, you know, extremely cavalier about fucking time travel being real.
"...so. I'm you, from the future." you begin. "At least, I think that's what's happening here. This is the first time anything like this has happened, so." You wave your arms helplessly.
"...charmed." Your past self looks at you uncertainly, as though you were some kind of strange, sentient cockroach that crawled out of the vents and began speaking perfect English. Which, considering the charred remains of cloth that still stuck onto your blackened skin, you supposed you did kind of look like a cockroach from a distance. Was kind of disconcerting to see that look coming from yourself, though. "Why are you...?"
"Oh." You blinked. "That. Remember that shiny rock I- er, you, but also I, picked up? Well, that exploded, and the result burned all my clothes off. Sooooooo, don't pick up any weird rocks next time, alright? Cause that... feels like it should really hurt, but I feel perfectly fine for some reason. Huh."
"I'll... keep that in mind." Your past self takes a half-step away from you, looking to release some of the lingering tension that had gathered. You were halfway temped to do so yourself, so the sentiment was very much shared. Which, you would hope was the case, considering you were both literally the same person. "So, you're from the future, huh? You've got any other insights you want to share. Any lottery numbers you're got saved up in there? Maybe an investment opportunity or two?"
"No, that's pretty much it. I'm literally, like, a few minutes after you, I'm sure."
"That's... kind of lame." Past-you's eyes suddenly widen in alarm. "Wait a minute, does that mean-?"
You quickly realize what your past self is getting at. Since he's literally you from a few minutes ago, that means he's likely already picked up the shiny rock at this point. And considering how long you've been talking with each other... "Oh shi-!" indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
