My name is Kylie Burke, and this is what happened.
I was the oldest of three girls. Sara was 13, and Iris, a bit of a surprise, was 5.
I had graduated two weeks before my birthday. My Journalism studies, along with my time on the school paper, had gotten me accepted into my safety school. All my life, I planned to be a TV reporter when I grew up.
As it turned out, I needed a backup plan, for unexpected reasons.

I woke up on the morning of my 18th birthday, wondering what would happen today. I had seen a strange car parked in front of the house once, and I wondered if it was for me. It wasn't a flashy car by any means, but it would be good enough for a first car.
As I got dressed, I noticed my clothes seemed a little looser. I wasn't on a diet, and there were no recent changes in my exercise routine, so I wondered why. I hoped it wasn't serious: I had my whole summer, my whole life, ahead of me.
Looking around, my eyes fell on my growth chart on the door frame, the pencil markings showing how much I'd grown over the years. The last, tallest mark was when I had stopped growing. On a whim, I stood against the door frame, held my hand at the top of my head, and looked.
"That can't be right."
I triple-checked that my feet were together and flat on the floor, my knees straight, my back straight. I marked my height with a pencil. Then I looked.
"That's impossible."
Finding a tape measure, I checked to see if all the marks were right. It seemed unlikely that anyone would alter the marks just to play a prank on me, on the off chance I would decide to measure myself, but not compared to the alternative.
The upper mark, from when I was fourteen and a half, was 5', 8", the same as I had been since.
The mark I'd just made was 5', 7".
I had somehow become an inch shorter.  indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
