Chapter #4

A little good deed

    by: Slaad11 Author IconMail Icon
Thankfully, you land much sooner than expected, painfully but safely slamming into a metal grate! You stand shakily and drop your useless smoldering pant legs. At least you’re wearing undergarments. As you peer around your dimly-lit surroundings, you hear a voice from directly beneath you.

“Hey!” The voice is a loud whisper.

“Hey… are you okay?” You ask the voice, looking down through the grate at your feet and seeing what looks like either a young child or a halfling woman trapped in a small cell.

"I'd be better if you could pull on that metal bar next to you that keeps my cage locked!"

You quickly bend down and feel a metal bar and cable near the spot where you landed. You feel one section that is attached to a large spring and try pulling hard. It starts move a little, and just when you think to ask if you’re pulling the right bar, you hear a clank and see that the cell door has popped open.

“Yes!” the voice squeals. You look around nervously, wondering if the noise you made from your landing and the squeal of joy from what you have determined must be a female halfling are going to alert the illithid. “Thank you!” the voice whispers in a much quieter tone.

"Anytime!" You whisper back, then looking around for some way down to her, you add "I don't see a way through this grate, so I'm going to keep going. My name is Areal, by the way. Maybe will meet up later. If not, good luck."

"I'm Jade.” She replies, “I'll keep an eye out for you on my way out of this hell. Thanks again."

You decide that you have pressed your luck quite enough, so you wave down at the halfling and trot briskly, but silently across the metal grate. Coming to a ledge, you turn and grab onto the grate, dangling and feeling for a foothold. Your feet find crossbars and you climb down about ten feet and feel another metal grate floor. You walk across it a little ways and see a light below you. It looks like there is an access hatch here, with a latch on your “floor” side that opens into a passage below. You could open it and drop down into the passage, or you could go further across what looks to be the roof over a network of other passages.
