James and Jupiter meet a naughty Mercury

"Wake up!" someone says to me, and I do. I snap awake. That's strange. I've never regained consciousness in that way before, like someone throwing a switch.

"I knew you'd turn evil one day, Sailor Mercury!" someone says. It's Sailor Jupiter. We're both stuck to a hovering metal column, the floor several inches below us. Gravity manipulation. We're in a lab. There are all sorts of things I don't recognize, but the overall layout suggests "Evil Research." It would look pretty cool if I could work out why I was here.

"No you didn't!" Mercury tells Jupiter. She sounds pouty when she says it, which isn't like the Mercury I know. This one wears her hair longer, and her suit's a darker blue, almost purple. "I'm the last person you ever expected to turn evil! Though I'm not the same person you know, and I'm not really evil. I'm just trying out a few things."

"Like evil," says Jupiter. I look over at her. Sailor Jupiter's mad, not confused. Maybe she stayed awake the whole time. What was the last thing I remember? I can't. I woke up this morning. Then I woke up again, here. The rest is a blank.

"More like mischief," says Mercury, thinking Jupiter's quip over. "If I was evil, you would have been in for a much ruder awakening. Which can still be arranged."

"Why exactly are we here, Mischievous Alternate Sailor Mercury?" I ask her. She smiles sweetly. She doesn't look very evil, but I'll wait and see.

"I have a series of trials to run both of you through," Mercury says. "Innocuous. A little demented. I think you'll both like it."

"You must have gotten over on us with mind control," I say.

"Just on you, James," says Mercury. "I used knockout gas on Jupiter."

"That's low!" I say, which is only telling the truth.

"Yeah?" says Mercury. "You won't believe what's next!"

Sailor Mercury sneers, and I feel uneasy.
