Chapter #8

No more games!

by: Scifiwizard Retired Author IconMail Icon
As you walked home, you thought furiously over what Samantha had done and said. 'That's the answer, boys and girls' "Samantha's sister married uncle Jack before he died." you whispered to yourself. "That might mean..." you gasped, placing two and two together. "Mom is a witch too!"

"What!?!" asked Harry, quietly. "Did I hear you right?"

You nodded. "That's the secret they've been keeping from me." you said, quietly. "All the girls in my family are witches!" you pondered for a moment. "They must have kept it to themselves because boys don't have the gift."

"That would explain a lot of things." said Harry. "What do we do?"

You fumed. "It's time for the 'man of the house' to put his foot down."

With that, you walked into the house with Harry following. You motioned for him to wait out for sight then entered the living room where mom and Hayley were having a talk over some tea. "No more games, mom!" you yelled, startling her. "I have an idea what you've been keeping from me and I'm very upset that you couldn't have just up and told me!"

"Just what do you think we've been keeping from you, young man?" asked mom, rising to her feet.

She was annoyed, you could see it in her face, only you were furious and did not care. "You are all witches!" you said, your anger clear in your eyes. "Harry went to aunt Samantha's house to ask her, I tried to stop him but..." you pulled him into view. "...but I was too late!"

Mom and Hayley's eyes widened in horror but you were not done venting your anger. "I had to learn this from a relative instead of from you!" you yelled, crying. "It really hurts that you can't trust me with the truth!"

"Please, can you change me back?" asked Harry, more frightened than annoyed. "I was only trying to help John."

Mom sighed, shaking her head. "Sit down, both of you." she said, firmly. "We need to talk."

You and Harry entered the living room, both keeping a eye on mom and Hayley as you sat down. Giving another sigh, mom sat down as well, waving her hand at Harry who quickly transformed back into his male form. He smiled, seeing that he was back to his old self and was about to thank mom but she hushed him silent.

"John, Harry, it was not our intention to single or shut you out." she said. "We merely did not know how to tell you."

"As you put it, if you don't know how to say it, just say it." you said. "Do you know how many missing persons posters I hung up while Hayley was missing?"

"I can't count the number of phone calls we made, trying to find her?" added Harry.

"I know you were worried about her." said mom. "I also know that you made every effort to find her, I'm proud of you both, it proves that you are very close to your sisters, John and you close to your friends, Harry. Believe me, Hayley would have done the exact same if the roles were reversed."

Hayley nodded. "All of us girls would have, John." she said. "The same goes for you, Harry."

"I regret that our little secret pushed you to disobey me and go to Samantha's house." said mom. "Least now, you know why I forbid you to go there." she managed a small grin. "How did you like being a girl, Harry?"

Harry gave a humorless laugh before you stated, "I'm guessing that I don't have this gift."

Mom shook her head. "Not while you are a boy, no." she replied. "You will as a girl but not Harry, which is why we did not know how to tell you. Especially since..."

"Since what?" you asked.

"There is a condition known as the twin factor, John." said Hayley. "Simply put, when Mel starts practicing magic, the dormant magic within you will awaken and you will become a girl... permanently."

"It's a balance that exists between a witch boy and his twin witch sister." said mom, seeing your horrified expression. "You and Mel are physically and magically linked. Unless your physical strength matches her magical power...."

"...I will turn into a girl." you finished, feeling shaken. "What if my physical strength surpasses her magical power?"

"Then you will have a new brother until 'his' now dormant magical power builds to reestablish the balance." said Hayley. "However, that has not happened in over a fifty years as the twins are not told until their thirteenth birthday or a blue flame appears in their left hand.."

Mom summoned a harmless blue flame to her hand, startling you and Harry. "When this happens, it means that the magic within a witch has awakened she will have magic powers." she explained. "I pushed you to be strong to avoid the twin factor, John. I can only hope it was enough."

You wanted to say something but a terrified scream stopped you. You jumped up, knowing that it was Mel who was screaming and raced up the stairs to her room. Reaching her door, you saw her standing up, shaking as she stared at a blue flame burning harmlessly in her hand.

You have the following choices:

1. You try to comfort Mel.

*Noteb*
2. You race for the gym.

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
