You were both shocked and admittedly quite embarrassed as she started confessing in front of your friends in such a sappy way, you could hear the snickers behind you as she kept hugging you as tightly as she could. It did feel nice, but it was all so sudden and so strange you were having trouble registering it for a minute.
"It's.. It's this a joke, Melissa?" Deep down you knew it wasn't, but a mix of the desire to keep a good appearance in front of your friends and how weird it was to see a girl that supposedly hated you suddenly confessing to you like that made you feel like you had to ask the question, just to make sure.
"Are you serious? Just.. ugh.. Good luck in the initiation" her hurt expression made you feel more guilty than you expected, but she didn't give you time to fix your mistake as she simply left a paper in your hand and ran away almost crying again. You checked the paper and realized it was her number, which just made everything more strange.
"Don't worry, the same happened to me like half an hour ago with Val" Connor said, patting your shoulder
"And even to me" Ryan shrugged, which actually surprised you. Ryan was the guy in your group that wasn't that successful with girls for whatever reason. As far as you knew, no girls approached him, in a friendly or unfriendly way like Melissa with you.
"Huh? Why?"
"Dunno, all the girls are acting weird today" Thomas said
"Maybe is related with the initiation?"
"That's a bit insulting.. so Nikki only talked to me because I might not survive it?" You said feeling a bit deflated, but it made sense. You didn't know much about this initiation thing, but the way they made it sound like was as if you wouldn't ever be allowed near the school premises again if you failed. All you knew was that it was done for the sake of a safer environment, a tradition that ended up remaining even if the school gained a reputation as one of the best in the city, and how the school made sure whatever it was about remained a secret. Not that you ever bothered to check, but the "survivors" never talked about it again, and the "casualties" were never seen or heard of again.
"The initiation will begin in 10 minutes, all male students report in the gymnasium" the principal announced on the intercom and you looked at your friends again before deciding to walk. None of them knew anything more than you about what was going to happen, only Ethan seemed a bit scared over it because he heard rumors about students from St. Catherine disappearing and believed it was linked to failing the initiation but you thought that was nonsense, no school could be just killing or disappearing students like that and survive.
You arrived at the gym and stuck close to your friend group as agreed, waiting for whatever the test would be.
