You sit at the table, eating cereal while your older brother, Timothy, collects mail. You yawn once. Nothing exciting ever happens around here.
"Lucy!" Timothy called. "You've got a package!"
But things could get pretty close to exciting. You get up and poke your head through the doorway.
"Really?" you ask. "What is it?"
"I don't know. I didn't open it, silly."
You take the package from your brother and examine it. It's pretty small. Not much could be in it. You rip off the tape and open the flaps. It's a watch! You try it on. Ooh! Fashionable! But the time is off. You try to adjust it, and as soon as you move to editing the time, everything goes dead silent. You look up. Timothy has frozen from sifting through the mail. Birds have stopped in midflight; cars are parked in the middle of the road. Even the pedestrian crossing the street has stopped moving. Everything has. Except you. You look around, feeling as if you're in a dream. You switch the watch back to the normal setting and everything goes back to normal. Cars squeal by, the birds land in a tree, the pedestrian finishes crossing the street, and Timothy is whistling as he checks the names on each of the letters in his hands. You stare, wide-eyed in wonder at the watch, and realize the numbers are the numbers of the year.
