Following the wire, it leads you to a high-powered scanner currently emanating a harsh blue light over the room. Curious, you lift the lid. One of your books sits open and text-side down on the scanner. You pick it up and switch the scanner off. Jeezo, the spine is ruined.
"What the hell, Mike?" Nathan yells from the couch, pulling the deactivated headgear off his head. "I was just about to score with Hermione!"
You turn the book over in your hands. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. "Yeah, I certainly hope not. Hermione must be like ten years old in this one."
"Oh," Nathan says, his face falling. He glances uncomfortably around the room. "Prooobably a good thing you turned it off when you did then."
"Right," you agree sarcastically. "Because stealing a billion dollars worth of equipment is fine, is it? But when the police find out you came on to an underage fictional character, then you'll really be in trouble! You moron!" you yell, hurling the book at him.
"Hey! Hey! Hey! Nobody is going to find out I took the machine!" Nathan shouts back at you, dodging the book. "The neurology lab is going to be empty for another 13 hours. That gives me plenty of time to have some fun with it."
A grin forms on his face as he brandishes a second VR headset. "You're always telling me I should get into a good book. Come on, it'll be fun! Choose your favourite book," he says.
That's when you notice the pile of books cluttered around the scanner - most of them yours. "The machine needs a pattern around which to create the world," he explains. "So I hooked it up to one of the english department's scanners. You can go to any fictional world you want... Assuming we have the book, of course..."
