The largest invention you've ever seen constructed in your father's lab sits against the wall opposite the bottom of the basement stairs. It's a 9-foot-tall frosted glass tube built into an even larger metal construction, out of which trails pipes that run to other areas around the room. Condensation pours off the sides of the thing like dry ice, pooling deeply on the floor of the underground laboratory. Your sock'd feet are wet and cold.
As you approach the tube, you realise the frosting is actually ice crystalised on the outside of the tube. You reach up and wipe it away with the sleeve of your jumper.
