Let's go through the options.

Although, as an added thought experiment, what if the dragons weren't ordinary dragons? What if, to keep things spicy, some or all of the dragons were actually dragonoids? Basically, picture human bodies with wings, tails, fire breathing, and maybe some other dragon features. They're still fighting with the humans at the start of the franchise, and their language is based on growls, so there's still a communication gap, but I think this has the potential to change things up in interesting ways. However, this is merely a suggestion, not a requirement.
