"Step 1: Empty 250g of CuO into a beaker, and heat it for 30 seconds with 10g of K."
"Miss Blake, what's CuO and what is K?" you ask. "Also, how do I measure them?"
Miss Blake passes you two tubs: one marked 'Copper Oxide', and one marked 'Potassium'. "Don't worry about measuring them... just do it." Miss Blake says weakly, collapsing to the floor and still sweating.
You comply, mixing the two together and heating them over a bunsen burner that happened to be alight, probably from Miss Blake's earlier experiment.
The two powders start to jump about inside the test tube and eventually form a clear liquid giving off a red vapour.
"Step 2: Pour the product into a beaker and add a handful of magnesium shavings."
You grab a nearby pot and tip a bunch of shavings into the beaker. It starts to fizz wildly and the shavings are dissolved almost immediately.
Shaking, you hand the beaker to the weak Miss Blake, who quickly snatches it and drinks it down with a shudder. "That stuff tastes horrid." she exclaims, grimacing. You wait for a result...
