Deciding the job offerings were pretty shoddy, John figured the best course of action would be to see if he could get an extension on his rent due date. It was a stretch, since he'd been late on it before as well, but maybe if he explained the situation she'd understand. He wasn't going to enjoy this though.
After grabbing a quick shower and getting dressed, John made his way down to the landlord's office. Even though he's only had to go there a few times, he hated the place as much as that bar; it always reeked of something foul, even through the door, and was always kept looking like a pigsty. The landlord herself wasn't any better, a mean 40 something year old woman named Elaine. The last time he saw her, maybe 6 months ago, she was a disgusting 400+ lb beast who smelled like she hadn't showered in weeks, and had been eating nonstop. But who knows, maybe she cleaned herself up in that time?
John approached the door to Elaine's office, the stench of sweat and old food wafting out from under it just as he remembered. It being the dead of summer didn't help, either. Holding his breath, he knocked on the door.
"Come on in," a gruff female voice said from the other side. Please have lost weight, please have taken a shower, John pleaded in his mind as he slowly opened the door. He couldn't have been more wrong. A blast of humid, foul smelling air washed over his whole body as he entered the office, all of it emanating from the monstrous woman behind the chair. If anything, Elaine had gained weight since he'd last saw her. Her stained, sweat drenched white blouse looked ready to burst open due to the size of her bust, a single pitiful desk fan trying it's best to cool her off; the only thing clean about her appeared to be her black hair, kept up in a neat ponytail. Her office was even messier than before as well. Empty containers and food wrappers strewn around the room far outnumbered the actually important paperwork on her desk. The titanic woman added to this pile of garbage right before John's eyes, tossing a licked clean mayonnaise jar near the trash can.
"Well, what do you need?" she asked disinterestedly, her eyes only glancing at him for a moment before returning to her computer.
"Well, uh, I was just wondering if I could get just a little more time to pay for rent this month," John says, a bit unnerved by her cold demeanor.
"Hang on. You're John, right?" Elaine asks, pointing a mayonnaise covered finger at him before sinking said finger into a jar of peanut butter. He nods. "I remember you, you were here a few month ago. You know, you're the only person here that doesn't email me about these things." As she says this, John curses himself for not thinking of that. It's hard enough not to gag in her presence. "So, what's the problem this time?"
"Well, uh, see I'm kinda out of a job at the moment... plus, my girlfriend left me recently, and she was helping me pay, so... If I could just get, like, just a little more time to find a job and get the money, I could pay it all back..." Elaine continues to glare at him while stuffing her face with peanut butter, her expression only shifting slightly at the mention of his relationship situation.
She thinks about her client's plight for a bit, glancing between him and her computer screen, before leaning back in her chair and facing him.
