You are getting ready for your 15th birthday party. All your friends would be on their way in a few hours, and it was going to be a blast. You started this tradition three years ago when you turned 12. Everyone came over, went wild, had cake, then ruined the front yard with silly-string fights. It was a hit, and your friends looked forward to it as much as you did every year.
You are waiting out the morning in your room, watching TV. You're only doing it to pass the time, so you're just exploring random channels and only half paying attention. As your eyes drift from the TV, you spot something on the floor. Out of boredom, you lean out of your bed to examine it. Laying on the floor is a small circular disk, made out of silvery metal. It looks like something one would wear on a necklace. You roll off the bed and pick it up. It's cold and a little heavy for its size. While spinning it around in your hand, you see that there is a gap running around the edge, it looks like it can be opened. With a little effort, the halves part and turn about a common hinge. On the inside, there is some writing.
"What?"
The letters seems backwards and scrambled, after a few seconds, you give up trying to decipher them. You turn the object again, and see that the other half contains a mirror.
"Ah, maybe I can read it with this!"
You try to reflect the words on the mirror, but it seems impossible, again you lose interest fast, and merely toss the now closed mirror up and down. When you finally become bored with it, you decide flip it open one last time before putting it away somewhere. You happen to catch a reflection in the mirror. At first, the face looks familiar, a little like yours. However, there are a few subtle differences. After looking more closely, it becomes apparent that it isn't your face at all, you're looking at a girl's face. You're surprised and turn to see if anyone is behind you. There is nothing but the wall to your room.
"That was odd." You say to yourself, but, you're voice didn't sound quite right.
"Hmmm? A-aaaaaaaaah!" You say as you test your voice. It's high and soft.
"What the?" You jump out of bed, but the landing is a little shaky. As you walk to the bathroom to see what's wrong, you find that your balance is off. You bend down to look down at your legs. In place of your white socks and black pajama pants, you see tiny bare feet with painted nails and thin yellow pants partially covered by what looks like a nightgown.
"I wasn't wearing this." You hurry to the bathroom and look at yourself in the mirror. The same girl from the pocket mirror is reflected back.
Without a word, you re-examine your body. You reach for one of the ponytails on the girl's head, and you can indeed feel it, what's more, you can feel the tugging of your hand through your hair, which seems much longer. You look down at your body, however something is blocking your vision this time. The gown you are wearing in place of your shirt is being pushed up from underneath. You press down on the raised fabric, but this causes you to feel a dull pain.
"Ah! What?"
You rub the spot on your chest that you hit, and find it to be very soft. You also feel a strange ticklish sensation due to the rubbing of your hand. At this point, you finally realize what it might be.
"It can't."
You pull the gown over your head and drop it to the ground. Looking down, you see your two modest breasts held in a lavender bra.
You're on the verge of screaming, but no sound comes from your mouth. Without even being sure of what to do, you suddenly run back to your room and close the door. Still trying to deny your newly discovered form, you lightly push on the breasts again. To your dismay, every inch of your hands is felt through your expanded and sensitive chest. You look away from your now female body and spot the pocket mirror sitting on your bed. It was the cause of this, you knew it had to be, and you quickly rushed to pick it up. You yank it open and look in the mirror. For the third time, you find yourself a cute brunette with twin pony tails and a soft, round face. The only keepsake from your time as a male are your shocked blue eyes.
"Turn me back!"
Your voice belays your feelings, as it hardly sounds threatening or serious. Unsurprisingly, the mirror does nothing. However, the words on the other half have somehow rearranged. With haste, you read them hoping to find a way to return to normal.
"This mirror is like no other, it reflects not only light, but reality itself. Be warned, to look up it is to reverse the very nature of the world. The mirror itself will be changed along with it. If you seek to undo this reflection, find the mirror's reflection; its peculiar and genuine twin."
The words mean nothing to you except that, you are sure that it is the cause of your troubles. You feel like smashing it, but hesitate, you fear being trapped as a girl for all time. Just as you reach the peak of sadness, you become calm. New information enters your mind. You are now Rena Turner, as you have always been. You're a girl celebrating her 15th birthday with all her friends from school. It's just an ordinary day. Yet at the same time, you recall the life of Raven Turner. You hold all of his memories as if they were your own, and in particular, you know that you should be him.
These odd thoughts leave you confused. One side of you feels like everything is normal, the other is in a panic. You feel that you should at least investigate your worries, especially the mysterious mirror you found this morning, but you also think about what say it is, everyone will be here and the focus will be on you. Even if you wanted to get away and see which side of you was right, it would be tough. In the end, you make up your mind. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
