But instead of attacking, the Mage woman took a step back, her eyes wide with fear and surprise. She looked around, as if searching for an escape route. Her hands fumbled with the hilt of her sword, but she didn't draw it.
"I...I'm not going to hurt you," the zombie girl assured her, raising her own hands in a gesture of peace. "I don't even know what happened to me."
The Mage took another cautious step back, her eyes never leaving the girl. "You don't know what happened to you? You're one of the undead, how can you not know?"
The girl could see the fear in her eyes, but there was something else, a spark of curiosity. "I just woke up like this," she replied, her voice trembling. "I don't remember anything."
The Mage swallowed hard, her eyes darting between the girl and the safety of the swamp. "I... I should go," she stuttered, taking a few more steps backward. "I'm sorry, but I can't risk it. If anyone finds out I've been talking to a zombie..."
The zombie girl felt a pang of sadness, but she understood the woman's fear. She watched as the Mage turned tail and sprinted away, her boots splashing through the shallow water. The girl called out after her, "Please! I'm not like the others!" But the sound of the retreating footsteps grew fainter, and soon the woman was lost in the dense foliage of the swamp.
With a heavy sigh, she straightened up and took a moment to compose herself. Despite her new, macabre condition, she had retained her humanity. The scar on her neck was the only tangible evidence of her past life, a past she was desperate to piece back together. She couldn't blame the Mage for her reaction; the living feared the undead for good reason.
