Chapter #9

Always take precautions

"We can't go back after coming this far." Frank said in a stern voice. "We were only able to get about 10 miles outside of the city in an hour's time. At this rate we're better off just going on foot." Rob nodded his head slowly in agreement. "Right, I was thinking the same thing, it'll be more work, but at least we won't need to worry about getting stuck somewhere, like now..." Frank let off a laugh. "Hey, you did a pretty good job getting us this far, especially with so many closed off streets in the city. Its almost like you knew exactly where to go." Rob stretched his arms before climbing out. "Yeah, that was mostly luck, I just followed the same roads I used to get to work. People may call me a slacker, but I sure do know how to find shortcuts and avoid roads known for heavy traffic. I never figured it would help me escape a zombie infested city though..." Frank opened his door and stepped out, taking in a deep breath of the cool night air. "Yeah... I never thought I'd have to fight my way out of my own apartment with my brothers revolver. Guess its been a pretty crazy week..." Rob laughed as he closed his door back. "Yeah, but it sure beats a week of work." Strangely. instead of joining Frank at the front of the car he moved around to the back. "What's the matter, you forget something?" Frank called as he remembered that he himself had left his bag of snacks back at the game store. "Ah, shit..." He blurted out as he joined Rob. "What is it?" He asked. "Its nothing... I just forgot some of my supplies back at the store..." Rob grinned that devilish grin again and Frank started to feel a little uneasy. "Oh don't worry..." Rob chuckled as he popped open the trunk. "I got plenty of supplies stockpiled for an emergency."

Inside the truck were three backpacks along with several boxes of ammunition. "Holy... shit." Frank gasped when he saw everything. "Where do you GET this stuff?" Rob grabbed a backpack and tossed it to him. "I'm just crazy prepared is all... I think that one has all the extra ammo for your AK. Shame we couldn't bring the grenade launcher too, I also got some spare rounds for it." Frank put on the backpack and almost fell over. "Jesus this thing is heavy." Rob put on a backpack himself and opened the last one that was still sitting in the trunk. He pulled out a can of red spray paint and close the truck back with his key still in it. After giving it a good shake he sprayed a crude circle on the trunks lid, along with a "R" in the center. When he was done he threw the can off to the side of the road. "It really is a shame you didn't bring a friend with you... we're gonna have to leave the food and drinks here." Frank stopped in his tracks when he heard this. "Wait, there was food and water in there?! Thats more important then ammo, lets put mine back and take that one!"

Rob simply shook his head as he walked. "No good, we need the extra ammo in your backpack and the spare gear in mine. The food does us no good if it can't help us kill zombies." Frank couldn't believe what he was hearing, this guy really was crazy. "Just how the hell do you suppose we survive without it then? We can't eat bullets or whatever "gear" you got in your backpack!" Rob let out a sigh. "Look, I'm nice enough to get you out of the city, share my stuff with you, and not shoot you in the face for getting on my nerves... and FYI there's a reststop, diner, AND motel up ahead. We can eat and drink all we want there before moving on." Frank simply shook his head silently as Rob began climbing over the cars. It seemed he had no choice but to trust him. It was a little hard to get over the the cars with a full backpack while also carrying an AK, but Frank managed just fine and jumped down next to Rob. "Guess complaining won't do me any good, go ahead and lead then..." Frank said as he followed Rob down the cold, quiet road...
