Betty walked over to the edge of the garage and peered into the street below. There were a dozen, or maybe two dozen, zombies shambling past abandoned empty cars and lifeless looking houses. The once quiet suburb was now filled with the noise of moaning, scraping, and the occasional fear or pain filled scream. Many of the houses looked broken into despite having various qualities of defense. Betty's had been one of the lucky few they ignored for whatever reason. The only positive thing she could see about the current situation was the fact that all of the zombies were the common slow-moving ones she had seen on the news. She knew there were a few stronger types, but hadn't seen any of them so she would be unable to identify any of them right away. Hopefully, she would be with other people when the time came to actually fight these monsters and escape. Betty moved over to the side of the garage that overlooked their driveway and found the ladder her dad had left propped up in case the house was overrun. The level one zombies couldn't climb it and the garage was relatively safe with its massive door closed.
Betty took a deep breath and quickly climbed down before the zombies noticed her. She went around to the back of the house and was pleased to find that no zombies were in any of the backyards, at least none that she could see... who knows what awaited her behind the fences surrounding her neighbors houses? Still, it was the safest way if it meant not having to deal with a mob of zombies chasing her. She moved quietly and hopped over the wooden fence that led to Ms. Davidson's house. She and her husband had lived there with their two sons for the past ten years and they were always friendly and kind to whoever they met. Betty looked into a broken window into the empty house and felt a pang of sadness. They might've escaped... after all, no one in Betty's family had heard any noise coming from the house since day one.
Betty decided to take out her pistol as she made her way over the short metal fence into the next yard. She probably wouldn't need to use it, but it couldn't hurt to take precautions. She made it by the next three houses with ease. When she came to the last one on the street though, she ran into trouble. Before she could climb over the fence into the final yard she heard a loud growl come from the other side. Betty looked through a small hole and saw two dogs, one chained to a doghouse, one wandering about freely, both disfigured and obviously zombiefied. She quickly looked away, unable to stomach the sight for more then a few seconds. She looked back towards her house which was almost out of sight and tried to think. She walked to the side of the house she was next to and looked around to the front yard. The only zombies were several yards away, about half of them were surrounding a car for some reason. Betty could run for it... but if they saw her before she could get to the next street they'd chase her all the way to the church... if they didn't kill her instead. Betty looked down at the gun in her hands and back out at the street. Finally, she spared one final gaze at the fence where two zombie dogs waited on the other side...
