Chapter #4

Heading back into the heat

Shannon began playing another song as she remembered the events of the past five days. She had managed to defend her house for less then a day before the constant assault of zombies broke in and forced her to retreat. She had met with a few other survivors on her way out of the city, all of whom claimed it was too dangerous to try and make it out alone. Each of them had different plans, but they all agreed that finding shelter and joining with a large group was the best way to survive. Shannon scratched her head, did they really expect to wait this out? Or were they going to ban together and try to fight through the hordes of zombies until they made it to safety somewhere outside the city. "Ah hell, either way most of them are probably doing better then me." Shannon said as she looked over her meager fortress. "The only reason I haven't been killed yet is probably because this place is fairly secluded from the rest of the city. Only weak Beast's and a few level ones around here and most of them seem to stick to staying in the woods most of the time. I've only seen a few on the roads."

After a few more moments of consideration Shannon decided the best option was to get back into the city and meet up with a large group of people who had a plan to escape. She didn't like the idea of having to rely on others, but knew it was the only logical choice. There was no telling how far the zombies may have spread and leaving the city now could mean walking for miles through zombie-infested forests and towns... alone. She'd never make it past the city limits if that was the case. "Well... better get going." She said as she finished drinking her bottle of water and threw it aside. All she had was a handgun, 34 bullets for said gun, and a small switchblade that she kept with her incase she had to cut through some rope or duct tape, not really something that could be used effectively on the undead. Still, Shannon had used more mundane items as weapons before and they had worked fairly well... maybe the switchblade would get some use after all.

It took only a minute to remove the weak barricade that had sealed off the outside world and Shannon soon found herself making her way down the eerily empty stairs. The only sound coming from her own two feet as she made her way to the ground floor. There was a single level one zombie in the lobby downstairs standing in front of the broken glass doors. Shannon took aim and took it down with a single shot to the head. The body didn't even twitch as it joined the other 3 corpses that were strewn about the floor. Shannon reloaded her gun and walked out into the stations tiny parking lot and took a quick look up both sides of the road. No zombies, at least none she could see. She stepped out onto the road and began walking back towards the city. The looming buildings just beyond the trees seemed strangely intimidating in the bright sun, but Shannon was determined and wouldn't let that bother her. She kept walking past the burned out gas station she had seen earlier and soon came upon a few more signs of civilization upon the lonely road. Up ahead she could see a few broken into houses along the left side of the road and a small bait shop sitting next to a large lake on the right side. She wanted to keep moving, but also wanted to get some more supplies... What does she do?
