The beam bounced off the fluxed capacitor and shot right out of the bookcase entrance, down the hall and hit Mom just as she was coming back from Dee Dee's room with the laundry basket. She was walking around with her eyes closed like normal because she knew the layout of the house so well. She did notice a flash from behind her eyelids, but because she didn't feel the beam, Mom was none the wiser.
However, there was a slight rumble from her stomach. Dinner was less than an hour away so this was probably normal. She went down stairs, did the laundry, and went to the kitchen to start dinner. Since she was Mom, she felt she had earned a little snack as the rumble in her stomach was growing louder with each passing moment. It started with one cookie, then the last cookie. Next she raided the refrigerator, then the cabinet, before long there was nothing left for supper, but that didn't matter cause she was still hungry.
After fretting about this for a little while, Mom heard the first arrival come in for dinner.
