Chapter #5

Roll for Reality Change

"Take a pic, DM." Casey throws a lazy arm over Deidre's shoulder and uses Dennis' nickname. An oversized pipe wrench and half-dozen potion bottles of all shapes and sizes swing from her belt with the motion. "We'll need it for security when Deidre gets lost in the board game hall."

"One time." Deidre huffs an errant auburn curl out of her eye and levels the frame of her black plastic glasses. A pale blue dress shirt is strategically unbuttoned to show off a hint of her white spandex superhero costume underneath. "It was one time."

"And you disappeared for one whole afternoon, my favorite perpetual gamemaster. Six hours! Cathy was minutes away from calling the cops and putting you on a billboard." Casey tightens the arm affectionately around Deidre's shoulder.

"Cathy?" A foam knight's helm pokes around the corner. "Someone said Cathy?"

"If I say it three times, will you pop up in a puff of smoke?" Dennis teases.

"Only if you buy the pyrotechnics, DM." The Cathy in question doffs the helm and shakes a long blonde braid free. She's covered head to toe in foam full plate, painted a multitude of grays and browns to simulate rust. The outfit is a labor of love that must have taken all summer. Dennis has a set of leather rogue's gear stashed far back in the closet which took just as long, and came out not half as nice as Cathy's.

"No thanks, I've got another two years of school to fund." Dennis replies.

"And hopefully enough for another few events before I graduate this fall." Autumn sails into the room at a half-jog. "I put a lot of work into this character, and will not let it go to waste."

Where Cathy's armor is a work of art on its own, Amber's is a work in minimalism. 5' 8" and always just a bit pudgy, she's dreamed, no, obsessed over the idea of strutting into an event in the most impractical outfit a shut-in game developer could ever dream up. Armor is a generous term for what she's wearing. Leather straps hold a sword holster to her thigh. Her bottoms are more underwear than armor, and the top is no different. Molded form forms two sizeable globes that Dennis knows from years of friendship are completely empty. G-cup armor protecting a chest as flat as a board underneath. The "Summer of Cardio" had treated Autumn well though, with a lean stomach proudly on display.

"Yvonne, come on! Photo op!" Deidre turns her head to shout down the hall.

"I'm not ready!" A voice echoes back.

"Come on."

A door thuds down the hall, and Yvonne jogs into the room. Toothbrush hanging out of her mouth, an oversize t-shirt draped down to her thighs, and a full face of glitter, golden rhinestones, and plastic dragon scales curl up and over her right eye. The team's youngest member was obviously interrupted.

Deidre drags her into the group before the freshman member of their party can protest too much.

"Take it, DM!" Deidre gives the camera her best megawatt smile.

Dennis looks through the viewfinder, and dials in the focus. Ready for action. With all the work this summer to get their costumes ready, and all the events on the calendar, the RPGs deserve the whole school to recognize how talented they are.

The girls look good today. Honestly better than before he put the camera to his eye.

Dennis takes the picture.
