"What, you're asking me?" Dennis replied in a coy manner. "Well, since I'm going to be the junior here, and you're the young, vulnerable freshman, I think I'm supposed to say 'Let's go back to my place, baby' now, right?" He smiled.
"Dennis!" She feigned a look of outrage and punched him in the shoulder, but her smile made it clear that she wasn't offended. For his part in the show, Dennis pretended that her punch hurt him, and to be honest it did a little. The girl could swing!
"Your place then?"
Her second punch connected in exactly the same spot, and this time Dennis didn't have to pretend that it hurt!
Gina stopped walking for a second.
"Actually, we should go back to my place. My roommate, Claire is probably there, and I think you guys would really hit it off."
Dennis' heart sunk a little. Was she trying to hook him up with her roommate? Didn't she realize he had a crush on her? Still he dutifully followed her across campus to her dorm in silence while she talked.
"Claire is just so sweet and kind, I think you'll really like her, Dennis. I mean, I've only known her for a few days, but I can just tell. She's just so upbeat and positive and she's got such a great personality."
Oh god, he thought to himself. Did she just tell me she had a great personality? That's all there was to it, he was walking into hell.
He followed Gina up the stairs to her floor, watching her calves flex as she climbed and feeling a growing sense of dread. Oh come on, Dennis, it wasn't going to be that bad. Go in, make some smalltalk, maybe have a drink and then go home. Maybe call Gina back later to go out. Riight. Like he'd have the courage to ask Gina out later. Perfect plan! Like this situation wasn't already about as far from perfect as... hey, wait a second. The camera. If there was ever a scene that needed to be made perfect, this was it!
When Gina reached the door, Dennis called back to her and pulled out the camera.
"Surprise!" he called as he snapped her picture. Let's just see how perfect this gets, he thought to himself. Gina just rolled her eyes, opened the door and Dennis followed her in.
