This choice: To sleep, perchance to dream... • Go Back...
Chapter #7
Wire Terrier+Republicans=answer.
by: Happy Puppy
Hannah fell asleep thinking about Saturday-- a night where... something... might happen. If only she knew what she wanted to happen, she'd be set.
..............................
"Hannah, you've got to go for it."
She groaned. Past the empty aquariums to her left, sure enough, it was that insistent talking dog-- a combination of a Beagle and a wire terrier. Sure enough, it was lecturing her. Again.
"I know you think I'm lecturing you--"
"You are."
"--but all this worrying," the dog undeterredly pressed, "is leading you to nowhere, save loneliness."
The last time this dream had recurred was a month ago. Same endless rows of empty fishtanks, same fog, same floor making that same hollow noise with every step, like a gourd hitting cement. The only things missing were--
"Hannah! We, too, think that you should stop worrying about nothing and take a real chance for once in your life!" Sang Jeb Bush and Newt Gingrich, swaying in the wind.
Scratch that; everything WAS here: including the chorus of naked, singing republicans. Hannah made a mental note to figure out what it was she was eating before bed-- this had to stop.
"As I was saying," the dog continued, sniffing at a particularly hairy leg belonging to Bob Dole, "matters of the heart are matters for the heart to decide. Worrying denotes cranial function."
"Cranial function?"
"Is your subconscious the only part of you that pays attention during your high school psychology class?"
"My what class?"
The dog chased its tail in frustration. "Fine. Forget I said anything. JUST STOP USING YOUR BRAIN, FOR HEAVEN'S SAKE!"
As if on cue, the chorus of naked republicans piped in with an eighties song Hannah had heard on the radio. She only remembered part of the lyrics, but she'd gotten the jist of it:
Listen to your heart
And it do do do do
Listen to your heart
And you'll doo do do do
And if nobody answers,
You'll never know!
Listen to your heart
And it comes do doo
...............................
Hannah awoke in a sweat. For as weird as she felt, though, it seemed she'd found the answer she'd been looking for...
