Carolyn hurried through the halls of Lakeside High School; it was the first day of classes and she didn’t want to be late. She hurried past the classrooms glancing at the numbers looking for the right one when she ran into someone doing the same thing.
“Oh, geez! I’m sorry! I wasn’t looking where I was going.” Carolyn apologized as she started gathering her books and papers from the floor.
“It’s okay; I was doing the same thing.” The other girl said.
Carolyn and the other girl finished gathering their stuff and looked up at the same time. It was like looking into a mirror for both of them; they both had the same long brown hair, the same green eyes, everything was perfectly identical.
The other girl broke the awed silence first. “Hi, I’m Laura. Laura Simmons.” She said holding her stuff in one hand and holding out the other.
“I’m Carolyn Lismore. Nice to meet you.” Carolyn said as she shook Laura’s free hand.
“Hey, I’d love to stay and shoot the breeze, but we both need to get to class. If you’ve got First Lunch I’d love to get better acquainted.” Laura said before rushing away to her class. As Carolyn went to her class she glanced at her schedule and was pleased to see she did have First Lunch.
They met again during lunch and soon became good friends and learned a lot about each other. They both were adopted, Carolyn from the Happy Camper Orphanage and Laura from the Tiny Tots Orphanage on the other side of town, and they both had similar interests in fantasy and science fiction.
“Wow, I think the only difference between us is that I never seem to get sick.” Laura said.
“Really? You never had a cold, the flu, or… the chicken pox?” Carolyn asked.
“Not even once. The doctor says he’s never seen anything like it. He tried to explain what he knew, but all that medical mumbo-jumbo made me even more confused. All I could get out of it was that I seem to store and use nutrients better than the vast majority of the population.” Laura answered with a shrug.
“The closest I’ve got to something that most people don’t is a father that knows all the opening scrolls from Star Wars by heart.” Carolyn joked.
