Chapter #5

Cloak and Dagger

by: Wuff Fox Author IconMail Icon
A drunk wailed out, the bawdy song he was in the midst of bellowing echoing along the misty street. He cursed violently as he stumbled into a figure crossing his path, making him drop his empty tankard to the cobbles with a loud clang. Fists raised, the male coyote intended to avenge his fallen cup and painfully ringing ears both.

"What in the name of the gods you think you're doing!" He groaned, words slurred to near unintelligible levels by a stomach-full of ale, "You're gonna pay for wasting that, booze aint cheap round here!"

The cloaked figure turned to face the man and a chill ran down his spine. The coyote backed away as the void in the figure's hood gazed at him, the animal-man making the signs of both Sol-Ra and Nocturpus as the menacing being finally turned away, seemingly forgetting the whole ordeal just as the drunk soon intended to.

As the drunk went off to find a replacement, the figure continued on towards the Maimed Wolf, a tavern popular with Mightreach traders and the bigger, fluffier inhabitants of Greatmanor, before heading into the alley that wrapped around its side.

Another figure with its own obscuring cloak was waiting for him in the alley. As he approached, the man called out to them, his voice hoarse as he did so, "Lady Melissa Von Blücherstein, I would presume?"

"Would you?" A feminine voice asked from beneath the black cowl that faced him.

"I would," Watcher said as he drew a knife from his belt, the action almost imperceptible as he held the blade between gloved fingers, "If that were actually your real name."

Moments later and the throwing blade had already reached where Jane would have been standing, had she not ducked out of the way. Watcher took the opportunity without hesitation, his body bent forwards, cloak billowing behind him as he charged up the alley with a much longer blade held in his grip.

This was hardly Jane's first street brawl, but the move almost caught her off guard as intended. She was lucky that she'd already drawn her own daggers by this point, catching Watcher's own blade in her hastily crossed knives. The maneuver had been quick enough to push him back, but not nearly prepared enough to knock him off balance as she'd hoped. Almost immediately Watcher countered, riding the momentum to twirl before her, swinging his knife up towards Jane's unguarded belly from below. Once again he'd almost caught her off guard and once again she just barely escaped as she tumbled back. The thief had already almost been killed at least three times in this fight, and she wasn't sure she was ready to face such a skilled opponent...

As if sensing this fact, Watcher stopped, his breathy voice underlined by less than subtle amusement as he taunted his enemy, "Not used to this, are you? More of a sneak-thief than a fighter, Jane Drake..."

"Give me some credit then!" Jane panted out, unable to keep herself from shaking as she held her daggers ready, "Can't be that bad for a sneak-thief if I've lasted this long. Who knows? If I hold out a little longer I might just cut that damnable cowl from your head!"

Watcher let out a snort and pointed his blade directly at the brunette, "You could do that, or you could just lay down your arms and walk away, before I cut that head from your neck."
