Jacob felt a brief moment of agony. Then he was just left on the floor as his favourite video game controller. The necklace slipped away as he lost the ability to think. He was literally just a controller as the world returned to "normal", at least mentally, not forgetting anything and in shock of what happened. They were still all video game characters.
The girl who was formerly Ada Wong was repulsed at what Jacob had done, and stomped on the controller, "killing" him.
Sadly, the necklace was also stomped on. And in doing so, trapped humanity as video game characters. Forever.
It was a brave new world, but people picked up the pieces and most eventually enjoyed their new bodies and/or abilities to the fullest. Though no one ever played video games again.
The necklace's remains were burned, as to ensure it could never be used again. Somehow, the people of this new world knew the necklace was behind everything. The necklace called to them, offering power, but the people destroyed it instead.
And with the protagonist chosen dead, and the necklace gone, the world being an amalgam of video games...the world would never be the same. But without the necklace, there was no way to change it.
