A young man attending a hokey magic show finds that things aren't what they seem!
Chapter #1

Let the show begin.

Tyler Rush sat at a table in the front row of the club with his room-mates Reg and Jeff. The young college student was beginning to regret choosing attending this particular event for the evening's entertainment.

The club had booked an elderly stage magician performing under the name Mortie the Mystical. The haggard looking old man was dressed up in a musty old tuxedo that looked to be three sizes too big for his skinny little frame. The old man's white, balding hair was flared out in an almost comical manner. The old guy had started the show with all of the tired old cliched tricks. He'd poured some milk into a rollled up newspaper, produced some doves, and fiddled with a set of metal rings. Unfortunately not a one of them had gone well. The milk had spilled all over the stage, the doves had flown out into the room and pooped on a patron, and the rings had fallen apart where they were obviously cut.

It would've been great comedy if it were some kind of performance art piece but the guy was obviously really trying to pull the tricks off.

At first, Tyler had felt a bit sorry for the guy. Then he started to find the whole thing amusing. After a few of his pitiful tricks Tyler started to make wise-cracks to his friend's Reg and Jeff. When his friends reacted with muted laughter Tyler started to get a little more confident. Slowly but surely his running commentary turned into outright heckling. "Jesus dude...how did you score a day pass from the nursing home to get here..." Tyler's comment caused Reg, Jeff, and several of the people at the other tables to burst out laughing. It probably didn't hurt that the drinks had been flowing freely.

Mortie stopped what he was doing and held his hand up to stave off the glare of the stagelights. After his sight adjusted he spotted the source of the heckling; Tyler, sitting at a table leaning back with his arms crossed under his chest. "This may be a comedy club kid, but I'm trying to pull off an magic act hear. Ya mind giving me a break?'

"You could've fooled me dude; from where I'm standing the only explanation for what you're doing is comedy." Tyler chuckled back, which elicited even more laughter from the rest of the audience.

Mortie sighed and seemed to chuckle along good-naturdly. "Funny, kid, funny. I'll tell you what, why don't you give a hard-working performer a hand and join me up here on stage. If you think the act stinks so much maybe you can help me improve it a bit."

Reg and Jeff laughed and motioned to Tyler. "Go on dude, get up there! Yeah, it'll be hilarious!"

Tyler sighed before giving in. "Fine, fine. I'll give you a hand dude. Hell, I couldn't possibly make things worse."

The audience clapped as Tyler went up on stage with Mortie and bowed in mock honor.

Mortie smiled, but this time he had a barely perceptable devilish glint in his eye. "Great, great. Well kid, why don't you..."
