Alex laid back on the picnic blanket, arms propping up his head. He was smiling. Today was the last day of the semester for college before summer. Finals had passed and he'd finished his engineering courses with top marks and a paper already published. And now all that hustle and bustle was finished. He could finally just lay back and relax.
It seemed perfect that this coincided with the day Murphy's Comet would pass by the Earth, as is does once every 96 years. Alex had seized the opportunity to pack a lunch and drive out to a secluded field that he knew only a few minutes from his apartment. There he could watch the spectacle in piece, the wonders of the universe arcing through the sky above him as the Comet's trail left a meteor shower in it's wake. It was marvelous to see.
But then something caught Alex's eye. One of the faint twinkles that signaled a meteor burning up in the atmosphere didn't go away. Quite to the contrary, it seemed to glow brighter every second.
That's when he heard it; a low rumble steadily growing louder. The light glowed brighter still. Was it getting closer? Alex knew something was definitely wrong. The Comet shouldn't be losing any debris large enough to even impact the Earth, but the flaming ball of rock heading straight for him said differently. When the ground started to tremble, fight or flight instinct kicked in. He tried to scramble to cover, but the meteor impacted the ground before he got far. The was a tremendous explosion, and Alex felt himself sent flying before the world went black.
