The Approach

by: Bruce Lee Gifford Jr. Author IconMail Icon
Weeks past, and Felix had to continue taking care of the gryphon as well as all the other tasks Lord William assigned to Felix. Felix continued to stay as far away from the gryphon as possible and only entered the light to set the food down. Felix also noticed that the gryphon stayed in the corner the entire time every time Felix entered the cell to feed it. When it came time to clean up the feces, the gryphon was sedated so that Felix could go around the entire cell and clean up. However, Felix never wandered near enough for the gryphon to reach out and grab him. He was still very much frightened of the gryphon even when it was asleep. Because of this, Felix had never seen how big the gryphon was or what it looked like for that matter.

Felix was still too frightened of the gryphon to realize it, but the gryphon was afraid of Felix because Felix was a human. The guards and other humans that entered the cell would torture the gryphon and abuse it to try and make it do something the gryphon didn't want to do. The gryphon was only about six years old. As the gryphon stayed chained to the floor in its corner, it began to notice that one human was different from the others. It realized that Felix was the only human that entered that never harmed it.

Instead, the human would only feed the gryphon and fill its water. Each time the human came in, the gryphon began to grow more and more comfortable of the human. So much so, that it thought that if it approached the human, it might find comfort in the terrible nightmare it was in. So, one day, it decided not to just stay in the corner when the human visited with food.

Felix entered the cell as usual with the door shutting behind him once the deer was in and Felix had the water jug as well to fill the water bowl. As usual, Felix walked up to the bowl to fill it. The bowl was always in the light. Felix stared at the giant eyes that were always watching him carefully. Felix knelt beside the bowl and began to pour the water in the bowl. Felix looked down slightly to see when the bowl would be full

When Felix looked again, he no longer saw eyes. Felix looked upward and saw a large bird head right above him, looking downwards. In that moment where Felix wasn't looking, the gryphon had got up and walked up to him without Felix even noticing! Felix feel backwards and looked up in terror at the giant...
