As a male lion, Simba wasn't a very experienced hunter, so Nala had to take the lead as they stalked through the savannah looking for prey. After a while, they stumbled on a small herd of zebras resting in a clearing. Simba crouched down to spring out at the animals, but Nala held out her foreleg to stop him.
"We'll have a much better chance at taking one down if we go at them from two directions. I'm going to circle around. You wait here, and then pounce on my signal. Got it?" Simba nodded. He was excited for Nala to finally begin gaining, but he knew just enough about hunting to know that he would have to be patient.
After what felt like an hour, Simba saw a creamy paw rise above the tall grasses on the other side of the zebra herd. He sprang roaring into the clearing. The zebras panicked and ran off in all directions. The rush of zig-zagging black-and-white stripes around him made him dizzy. Whenever he tried to pounce on a particular animal, he found that it wasn't there any more. He had never really thought about a zebra's stripes being there to confuse lions, but now that he was in the middle of a rapidly-dispersing dazzle, he definitely understood that they weren't just for decoration.
To his shame, he didn't manage to catch a single zebra, and he had a bit of a headache when the animals dispersed. He was very disappointed until he saw that Nala had managed to take one down.
"Woah, how'd you do that?" he asked, flopping down next to her.
"Practice," she responded thickly. "Which is what you're going to have to do if we want this to work out." Nala was right, of course. Simba had no idea how to hunt, and if Nala had to catch her own food, she'd use up far too much energy to get really fat.
"I will, I promise," he reassured her. "But right now, we've got this nice zebra, so why don't you dig in, and let me worry about getting better at hunting."
"Oo-kay, but I don't want to have to be running around all the time..." Nala warned, then stood up and started chowing down on zebra.
