Phoebe had changed into something a little more comfortable by the time Cole rang her back, a few minutes later. He had some information from his Demon contacts.
"You were right, something is making you gain. It's a genie. It says that the wish was for you to recieve 'Heart's Desire'. It's a benevolent genie, so this is what the wisher intended, and it's really is heart's desire, or at least it is going to help someone achieve that. But it obviously can't tell us whose wish it was, nor do we know whose heart the wish is about. The wish is an ancient magic. Not even the Charmed Ones have the power to reverse or stop a benevolent wish."
Phoebe was incredulous. "So you're saying that I'm stuck getting fat? Becuase someone wants me to?" She rubbed her belly.
Cole tried to sound reassuring. "Whoever it is, they had to have everyone's best interests in mind. That's the only way for a benevolent wish to work."
Phoebe sighed, and looked down at the stretchy fabric of her cotton pyjamas. "And this is in my best interests?" She asked. "Or is it secretly 'my heart's desire?"
Cole shrugged, though Phoebe couldn't see him over the phone. "It is possible. Not even a Charmed One can truly determine what they really want until they get it or they lose it." He said. "A genie's wish doesn't just take into account your life so far, it also considers life yet to come. Perhaps, when you have gained eighty pounds, you will suddenly realise that you really like being that size and that you no longer want to diet or to exercise. But you never would have known that if you hadn't suddenly gained eighty pounds against your will. Or maybe 'Heart's Desire' is Paige's desire for you and Piper to survive..."
Phoebe interrupted. "And you think gaining thirty pounds is gonna help me fight demons and win?"
"Well," Cole replied, "it will actually inhibit you more than it would have done to your sisters, since most of your combat abilities come from actual skill at fighting, rather than just being a witch. And it may be that in a month from now, you must fight a demon that sucks the flesh from a human body, and you will only be able to survive because you have a few dozen extra pounds."
"Well, if this is a benevolent wish," Phoebe declared, "then it is a magical gain and dieting or exercising won't make a difference. Well, if that's the case then I might as well take the opportunity to indulge myself." She put a hand on either side of her softened belly and sighed. "Alright, little tummy of mine. Prepare to say hello to a brand new guest, someone I like to call...
