“Hey, Lucas! Ready for your trip?” she asked, her voice clearly trying to sound casual yet holding an undercurrent of urgency.
“Almost,” he replied, stepping aside, inviting her in. “I’ve just got a couple of things to finish before I head out. What’s up?”
“Oh, I was just thinking…” Jill began, her gaze darting toward the driveway, where an unmarked black van lurked in the shadows, its windows tinted and mysterious. “I want to show you something. Something really cool. It’s just down the street.”
“Uh, what is it?” Lucas stood in the threshold, hesitating. The van gave him an uneasy feeling, but he didn’t want to disappoint her or be rude.
