The name pretty much says it all. Cancer occures when a defective cell multiplies uncontrollably, creating a tumor that interferes with bodily functions. Magicians Cancer is pretty much the same thing except replace the word 'cell' with 'spell'. An enchantment cast by or upon the patient was flawed in some way and continues to lurk deep within the body and saps increasing quantities of the patient's life force.
But fret not young magicians. There is a treatment. Figuring out which spell had the flaw is beneficial but not crucial. This is convenient since discovering the general time the cancer started is difficult, not to mention most sorcerers cast on average 3 spells a day, it gets harder to calculate if the sorcerer fights a lot.
