Chapter #6

Her childhood friend, Red!

"Red?!" Leaf exclaimed, grabbing her hat. "What are you doing here?"

"Oh, hey, Leaf." Red said, rubbing the back of his head. Leaf frowned and helped him to his feet. She and Red had been friends for almost as long as she could remember. Hanging around town, climbing trees (Red was a real outdoorsy type) and going to school together. Recently, that had extended to their shared past time of lazing around, doing next to nothing. People often joked that they might as well have been brother and sister, both even being of roughly the same height and, to Leaf's chagrin, the same skinny body type. Recently Leaf had noticed a few belated curves coming onto her frame. And for someone like a surrogate brother to her, Red had done a decent bit of 'noticing' as well. It was probably nothing - Red was overall good-natured and easy to get along with, and had never done anything forward.

However, none of this explained what Red was doing on the road up to Professor Oak's lab, and Red was taking his time finding his signature hat and dusting it off.

"So?" Leaf asked. "What's up?"

"Well..." Red grinned, "You know how all summer you've been talking about becoming a trainer? And how I've got no clue what I'm gonna do?"

"It came up." Leaf said smartly. Red's mother had been a good sight pushier than hers about their new-found lackadaisical take on life. It had been driving him up a wall.

"Well, duh, I thought - I should become a trainer too!" Red said proudly. "Get to see the wide world...maybe take a break..." from his mother, no doubt. Leaf mulled this over.

"Huh. Yea, that sounds great. Hey, Red, you should come with me!"

Red grinned again. "That's the idea Leaf! Let's go." he grabbed her by the wrist and dragged her along. Professor Oak's lab wasn't much farther off.

"Ack! Red! Slow down!" Leaf complained. Her stomach was still tight, and sore from the fall, so the jostling was not appreciated. "I had a heavy breakfast."

Red let go of her and grinned sheepishly. "Sorry. Oh man, I can't believe I forgot breakfast. I'm starved."

"Well..." Leaf said, an idea forming in her mind, "We should...
