Chapter #3

Tell the computer your life story and ask it to...

    by: Aurthor Author IconMail Icon
“Look” you say, trying to appeal to the computer’s sympathy circuits, “If I retrieve the Star Nexus from the Dark Marshes of Doomsdunder and return it to the Space Academy, I’ll be a hero and automatically become a Space Ranger. It’s all I ever wanted to be!” Your eyes mist up and your voice cracks a little as you reminisce. “When I was a young boy growing up on the algae farms of Ag326 I used to watch ‘Tales of Galactic Patrol’ on the Tri-Dee. My friends and I would pretend to be patrolmen on the Acturas border, and set up empty Bio-Nutri-Aid crates as road blocks and checkpoints. Then we’d pretend that the pre-programed waste-carrier Bots were Agrean blockade runners as they smashed trough them without stopping, and we’d shoot at them with our photon pistols, well, bent sticks we would pretend were photon pistols, cause we couldn’t afford the officially merchandised ‘Galactic Patrol’ action sets that the rich kids who lived in the pumping sector would deck themselves out with…”
“All right, all right! The computer interrupts in exasperation. “I’ll take you to the marshes! Just stop with the old home reminiscing already. Cripes,” the synthesized voice mutters, “it’s no wonder we human interface systems have such a high rate of self disconnection.”
At that, the computer engages the hyper-drive and you experience that queer swirling sensation that is both the hallmark and bane of hyper-space travel; the feeling that marked the start of every hyper-space trip. It was a bit like a feeling of being swallowed like a glass of water. For a short while you’re not sure if you started out half full or half empty, only that you are definitely flat. And tepid. The feeling soon passes, and you settle down to the mind numbing boredom of hyper-travel.
A couple of times during the 20 minute journey you attempt to query the computer, only to have the navigation screen flash the words ‘Can’t talk right now, busy navigating’ at you. At long last, you feel the un-mistakable sensation of being regurgitated (the one other distinctly unique experience of hyper-space travel that marks the end) and your trip is over. You gaze out the view port at..

You have the following choices:

1. The dreaded Dark Marshes of Doomsdunder.

2. The dreaded Dark Marshes of Doomsdunder, but...

3. Someplace else

*Noteb* indicates the next chapter needs to be written.
