You drift off a little, thinking about the choices on offer. None of them are great, but you definitely want to stay a senior. High school has hardly been a barrel of laughs for you, and you have no desire to repeat it. Though you suppose being a popular junior, or even freshman would ease your passage significantly.
“Oh,” says Joe, catching you attention.
“What now,” sighs Frank impatiently.
“I just thought about something Chelsea said,” answers Joe. He suddenly switches to Chelsea’s voice again. “That witch girl Morganna Hollis.”
“So,” mutters Frank. “She’s not really a witch, she just like dressing in black and moping around.” Joe grins maniacally back at his brother. “Oh no… No, absolutely no way.”
“What,” you interrupt, completely lost.
“What my brother is suggesting is that we make Morganna an actual witch girl,” replies Frank wearily. “Which is spectacularly dumb, even by his low standards.”
“Why not,” pouts Joe, using his own voice again. “Between our prodigies and the books we rescued from Blackwell’s we could be the Witches of Westside. So capitalised,” he adds with a grin.
“Oh it's all fun and games till the Stellae show up,” growls Frank in a low voice.
“With Blackwell’s house burnt down, there’s nothing to link back to us,” explains Joe. “Besides, the trail ends in Cuthbert. We’d be careful.”
“I don’t like it,” says Frank with an air of finality. He folds his arms and give Joe a long hard stare.
“Not that it’s your decision anyway,” mutters Joe under his breath. “Fine. Who do you suggest?”
“Jenny, Ioeger and Lamont,” answers Frank firmly.
“I thought we were going to take control of different groups,” whines Chelsea.
“We’re better off sticking together,” counters Frank. “Those three would be a good choice. They’ve got a low enough profile that we can stay under the radar.”
“Jenny is friends with Yumi ,” interrupts Chelsea, her eyes glittering with malice. The sudden turnabout in her attitude catches you by surprise. There’s nothing that she can’t turn to her advantage, you suppose.
Frank grins darkly. “With a couple of recruits in the right places we could be running things and no one would know it was us. We still have two more sets of essentia we could use.” He hesitates for a moment before continuing. “We could make some more golems too.”
“So you’d be like, the powers behind the throne,” says Chelsea. She grins a little. “I can live with that.”
“What do you think Will,” asks Frank, turning to look at you.
