Chapter #5

No more crazy stories.

    by: gerald Author IconMail Icon
You almost jump when the doors open in front of you. Taking a couple steps back you watch as they show figure of your girlfriend standing in the passage. Mindful of the events went through and wary thoughts about what may still happen if you provoke some dangerous ideas, you await her next move. Truth be told, even though you were preparing for this for some time, you always assumed that Jane will believe you quickly - after all, having power of a god seemed easy to prove. But then of course, you have been working on the project for so long, that the idea supernatural skills was natural to you. Well, maybe not that familiar - but you were at least somewhat used to it, being able to see the effects with your own eyes and even experiencing some was quite convincing. Maybe you should have explained what you were doing before giving her the solution? The problem was that she would probably not believe it either, as it sounded like science-fiction, worse even - more like some lousy fantasy story. The lab did not even bother to control the researchers not revealing the secret, since nobody would believe them anyway.

As another train of thoughts runs through your head, she just stands in the doorway looking around the room. You try to imagine what she may be thinking - that she was seeing things a moment ago? It seems like the simplest explanation. "Then how can I prove it...", you ponder, but she starts to speak interrupting you: "Alright, I knew it was just some trick - now tell me what you just did and this time no more crazy stories." "Great, like I did anything...", you think.

"Jane, please, at least consider what I am telling to be true - and please try not to think about anything dangerous while..", you start, but she interrupts "Back to excuses then?" You quickly reply trying to remain calm and absolutely serious: "No, no - but I only did tell you the truth, even if it sounds crazy."

"So what, I'm some sort of god now?" - "Well, a goddess to be exact..." you clarify, which causes her to squint her eyes and cross arms while looking at you in silence.

A possible approach comes to you: "I know it may be hard to believe, but think about this: you have just seen a broken wall and how would I get rid of all the rubble and smoke in five minutes you were out, not to mention perfectly closing any holes in the wall that you must have noticed? Or do you suggest that you are seeing things now?" you finish and realise afterwards it may have been a bit too aggressive for the situation you are in.

"I don't know what I have seen... and how do you explain it all gone now?" she inquires, "Well, my best guess is that your disbelief in what happened must have reverted everything to the original state."

She shakes her head and laments "No no no no... this is crazy. And even then, why would you give it to me in the first place?"

Well. That thought has not occurred to you earlier. Somehow it seemed natural to give your girlfriend the potion to make her omnipotent... but now that she mentioned it, you don't really know what drove you to do this - perhaps it was one of the visions, or maybe you just... "Because I trust you... and I love you.". you admit honestly. Any remains of anger or irritation vanish from her face as the frown turns to a happy smile. You continue more confident: "Look, just try to do something with the power, like create something or perhaps lift a chair..." and suddenly stop as you are lifted a couple feet into the air.

"Oh my god!" she exclaims and you immediately drop down, which causes you to fall on your back. "Are you ok?" she shouts and jumps to you.

"That's what I said about dangerous thoughts..." you point out, which makes her frown, only this time embarrassed: "Sorry...", she starts, "It's just.. so unreal. But how could you do it?" - "Do it...?" you ask confused, "Give me the damn potion, I never wanted anything like this. What if I hurt somebody... or you..." she ends with concerned voice. "Don't you see? That's exactly why I gave it to you - I knew you wouldn't do that."

"Awww", she murmurs and leans to hug you, "you are so sweet." As she embraces you, it cannot escape your attention that she seems much stronger than usually. In fact, as you hug her back, you quickly find out that her iron grasp starts to strangle you forcing all air out of your lungs. You notice that her hands around you seem immobile to your attempts of breaking out, but you are barely able to groan. "What's wrong?", she asks loosening her grip. "Can't breathe..." is the only you manage to squeeze out, but she quickly retracts and starts to apologise again. You gasp for air and try to comfort her "It's ok, don't worry", but she still looks at you disturbed. That was just the sort of kind-hearted behaviour you were expecting of her. Perhaps without the life-threatening events.

"I guess I got a little carried away...", she explains and asks "What limits you think are there to those abilities?" After a moment of reflection - and maybe calming down after almost being suffocated - speak that you have no idea if there should be any limitations, namely anything she can possibly imagine should come true. She responds slightly upset: "But you could have just given it to nobody, I mean, why should anybody have so much power?"

"Well, that is the thing... Although I think I am the first person to figure out how to prepare the catalyst and even that it is necessary, others will soon follow. You need to know that there are dozens of researchers at the lab where I work and even the army was recently showing some interest in those supernatural studies." You quickly decide to skip the horrific visions of death and destruction that you had after subjecting yourself to the original serum once. You hope that future would be caused by somebody else, so you needed to stop it. "If I did not act they would soon figure it out as well and they may have given it to some trigger-happy army psycho... I mean they already almost destroyed the world a couple times with nukes. Only with these powers it could be so much worse. That's why I needed to stop them. We need to stop them."

You both contemplated this in silence for a long moment. She finally speaks with uneasy voice: "We... but what can we do?" "Well, you can make anything you can imagine happen, remember?" She blushes at the seemingly obvious thought, but after considering expresses her doubts "But how can I stop anyone from making some potions... I don't even know what was in it, how can I..." she ends awkwardly.

It seems that unforeseen problems continue to show up. You realise she actually made is a very good point - even if she wishes some potions would not work, then how could you tell that it worked? And how could you be certain there wasn't another way to achieve the same power? Well, she can most certainly try, but how to verify it... It suddenly occurs to you: "I know! We can go to the lab so I can show you the mixture and you can wish it does not work any more. That is, if you're ok with it?" you suggest. "Sure, I'm still unsure what I can do, but that's the least I can do", she responds and asks if you both should take your car. "I was rather thinking you could.. 'teleport' us there?" you point out.

"Teleport..." she blurts, "You still remember where it is?" you try make sure. Then suddenly you find yourself standing on the stairs of the research institute itself with Jane next to you and can only add "I guess you do, then." She pokes you after this slight tease - thankfully light enough not breaking any of your bones or anything like that - and asks if you should go in.

You confirm and lead the way. One thing that did not occur to you before was that even though the scientists were out, since it was already night, guards were still in - more problems, apparently - and it seems strange that you are entering the building with an unregistered person, without your work badge and.. shoes - both of which were left in Jane's house. She was looking only marginally more respectable with flip-flops. Fortunately, they seem to simply believe your explanation that you want to introduce a new expert to one of the research problems - which was somewhat true, in a way. Either way, they let you both in. In elevator you realised that it was probably Jane's doing, which she confirmed blushing again: "I did not want us to get caught and just wished they would accept your story. Which was rather poor, by the way." You leave the topic, as the door open and you both quickly move to the research lab. Fortunately every door up here is only secured with a code - it always seems to be a problem for new workers, as there are so many different codes. When you approach fourth, they simply open - you look at Jane surprised, but she just smiles and walks through hinting something about boring security. "Fortunately it is the last one", you answer.

With that you both enter the main testing room, with a row of storage freezers, several workstations and two menacing medical EEG machines that were used to study the effects of the serum on test subjects. Employee badge locked freezers... "Um, remember how I explained the guards why I lost my badge...", she looks at you curiously and simply hands you your badge. You silently note how she is becoming increasingly acquainted with her powers and follow to open one of the lockers to take a serum container.

"This is it", you mention, "now if you could wish that it would have no effects, it should make it useless for any research. Only not just this vial, but rather the mixture in general." She nods, responds "Got it" and just continues to look at you. Uncertain if she is still figuring this out you ask "Is it done..." - "Yup"

"Well, in that case we better check that it worked", you say and get another bottle to drink yourself. "Wait, now you don't believe in this power?" she complains, but you explain: "I do, but I need to be absolutely sure..."

It turns out that..
