Slowly Alex awakens, sand grains in his eyes and mouth. Spitting harshly he sits up and stares.
"What the... hell...."
Gazing around all he sees is sand for miles around, though there are quite a few high dunes. Then he notices shards of glass nearby, half buried by sand. Reaching down he picks some up, to find it's the remains of a glass ball, shattered into large pieces. There are dozens all around him... then he remembers the bright lights. Are these the remains of those lights in his room? What is going on?
The sun is low in the sky and he thinks it's a little lower than when he first woke up. And deserts are cold at night! He's wearing Pajamas, not very warming! Struggling to his bare feet in the stark landscape he stares around in panic, starting to shiver, even though it isn't cold now. Fear is starting to seep into his bones.
One direction seems the same as another here, though there is a large dune nearby. Maybe from there he can see over the other dunes. With luck there is shelter near here.
It's a struggle to keep upright with sand shifting beneath his feet. Sand has got into his PJs and they itch like mad, but still he shivers in the heat, fearing what will happen at sundown. Every now and then he half heartedly shouts out to see if anyone can hear him, but there is no response. Maybe an hour later, the sun dipping close to the horizon, he crests the sandy ridge and stares over the top.
