In some ways, your mother is thoroughly American. She watches all the "Housewife" reality shows. She is fanatic about her fitness regimen (a trait she has instilled into you). She has no problem arguing with your father if she thinks he's wrong, and often refers to him by loving if irreverent nicknames, including "My Sweet White Boy."

In other ways, she was still the young woman who had grown up in a small Pakistani village twenty-five years ago. She never left the house unless her hair was covered and she was in the company of your father. You never left the house, period. Your study sessions with Mike were strictly supervised, and the two of you had a transparent barrier between the two of you at all times.

But the fact that your mother arranged these study sessions with Mike should have tipped you off that your mother had something like this in her brain even when you were little.
