Dive under the water and swim away

    by: Unknown
"Celeste-!" Jesse extended his hand farther but the surf was pulling her further back into the ocean. "At least come to the house for ten more minutes. Then you can do whatever you want."

"You don't understand-" Celeste's hair started to creep along her back, independent of water or wind pushing it; it stretched from her skull, became more slippery and like seaweed in texture. The scales on her tail seemed to be spreading higher up her body past her stomach, thankfully submerged, and threatening to peek at her breasts where Jesse might see and comprehend the horrid change.

There was no time. "I'm sorry," she repeated and dove into the ocean, arms outstretched to propel herself out of earshot so she couldn't hear Jesse's pained cries. On the night when their love, hinted at for months, had finally surfaced with all its possibilities, now obtainable, fate had pulled Celeste away with a melodramatic flair. She swam deeper and deeper, neither the water pressure or lack of oxygen bothering her. The tail beat against the water viciously, leaving bubble trails as it cleared ten to fifteen feet at a time. She had only wanted Jesse as a boyfriend! She just wanted to finish college with him by her side, if they were lucky, but neither would be happening now, would it?

Celeste slowed down with a decisive flick of her tail, pulling it in front of her to break against the current until she was floating in one place. She looked for the shore but could only see cracked bedrock and beady-eyed fish gulping up krill. Scales now covered her body up to her breasts and where her skin persisted it gained a teal glow. Her hair was once a contained and manageable torrent, but underwater it exploded into multiple rapids flowing in many directions. It extended at least three feet away from her body and would, at rest, cover her rear. Strands floated in front of her eyes and glinted a mahogany red instead of their original blonde.

I'm alone... She thought. Alone and a mermaid... And I don't know whether to be surprised or just sad.
