Carlos stretched luxuriously, then lay back in bed. Summertime. Sleep in. Ten o'clock. This is the the life, he thought. No more rushing, no more school, not until September. A few minutes later, he rolled out of bed, pulled on shorts and a t-shirt, and padded down the hallway to the kitchen, where his mother had left him breakfast: sticky buns, sausage in the warming oven, yogurt and fruit salad. Grabbing a pan, Carlos set about frying some eggs to go with it, as he stuffed chunks of sticky bun into his cheeks.
Had he been paying attention when he put on his shorts, he would have noticed that they were tighter than they had been last week, for the last day of school. But Carlos is not paying attention to anything, except his appetite.
Which, even for a sixteen year old male, is, well, 'generous'. On the edge of 'enormous'. But, up until now, his metabolism has taken care of anything he cared to stuff in his mouth. In fact, the arrival of male hormones a few years ago meant that he suddenly had nice muscles to go with his skinny frame and enormous appetite. But....
Now Carlos has a car.
No summer job.
Generous parents.
A love of food.
And, his hormones are no longer growing him "upwards". Which means he may begin to grow "outwards".
But, none of this is on his mind as he eats a breakfast that would suit two, maybe three grown-up guys. In fact, he's proud of how much he can eat - as soon as he's finished breakfast he's heading off to Maria's.
Where, in an hour or two, Maria's mother will make them lunch....lots of lunch.
And it won't be Maria eating most of it, no. Carlos will. Which Carlos will enjoy.
