Matt first locked his room door; he didn’t want anyone walking in on him during the test. He also wanted to make sure that there would be no mistakes that would leave him too small to control the ring, so he thought, slowly and deliberately, My body and the ring on my finger but none of my other clothes should shrink to half size. Suddenly, to Matt it seemed as though the walls and ceiling of his room receded to twice their distance from him, and the room got a lot cooler. Looking down, he found all of his clothes except his t-shirt in a pile around his legs, and his t-shirt was only barely hanging on his shoulders. The ring, however, was proportionally the same size as before, still snugly on his finger.
He removed his t-shirt, stepped free of the pile of clothes, and thought, Return me and the ring on my finger to their normal sizes, but do it slowly. As he had imagined, the walls and ceiling appeared to slowly return to their normal distances, as he and the ring returned to normal size.
OK, test 1 complete; time for test 2,, Matt thought. He took the ring from his finger and placed it on the floor, then touched it with one finger and thought, Shrink me to one-quarter of my normal height. The walls and ceiling again receded, but this time to twice the distance as before; as he shrank, his finger lost contact with the ring, but the shrinking continued as ordered.
Time for test 3, Matt thought, and concentrated on the ring apparently about four feet away, and thought, Return me to my normal size.
Nothing happened.
Matt walked over to the ring, and, touching it, repeated the mental command, and found himself again at his normal size.
